Matteo Berrettini suffered a serious injury during the 2023 US Open which has kept him on the sidelines since then. During his Round 2 match against Arthur Rinderknech the Italian ruptured his ankle ligament. The former world No.6 has been nursing multiple injuries in the last two years. He had undergone surgery on his right hand last year and also missed the Roland Garros this season due to an abdominal injury.
It’s very normal for a professional athlete get bogged down after catching up an injury especially when you are in a good momentum. No sportsperson wants to miss events during his career. Similarly, Berrettini recently opened up about the mental stress and challenges he had to face during his rehab.
"There are many, many reasons why I was really sad. First of all, obviously because I couldn't compete, which is the thing I love to do. Then there was another thing that came in. I wasn't enjoying the process of coming back,"
said Berrettini speaking to the press in Malaga.
The Italian revealed that he was in one of his lowest points of life. The inability to perform in some of the biggest events of the season had put him under immense mental pressure. Further, he added that he was even in doubt about whether the light would appear at the end of the tunnel meaning whether he will again play or not.
A ruptured ankle ligament requires a couple of months before a player can step upon the court. This period of rehabilitation was no better than jail, the Italian feels. However, he revealed that he needed to give his body time and try to be in a clear and healthy frame of mind.

Matteo Berrettini eyes Australian Open to make a fiery comeback after returning from injury
The 27-year-old was in a pretty good momentum this season after winning the first three matches of the United Cup. Berrettini also had some good performances in Wimbledon this season with victories over Alex de Minaur and Alexander Zverev. However, he was knocked out by Carlos Alcaraz who went on to become the champion. This momentum however was short-lived as the Italian suffered the injury during the US Open.
The Italian’s career has been affected by some serious injuries forcing the player to miss some key events. The former World No.6 had just made one appearance in the last two years of Roland Garros, missing this year’s event for abdominal pain. After the injury in the US Open, he was forced to end the 2023 season prematurely.
The Italian felt that he needed to give his body some time and not overthink because the mind and the body go together. However, he is dreaming of making a comeback next year and playing the entire season starting with the 2024 Australian Open.
The 27-year-old is present in Malaga for the Davis Cup as a non-playing supporter for Italy who are through to the quarterfinals. Berrettini will next feature in the Australian Open where he has a good time playing reaching the semifinals in 2022. He himself had revealed that he likes the Australian swing and would hope to gain back his momentum.
