Red Bull Racing’s Alex Albon has spoken out about the claims that the team develops its cars around his teammate, Max Verstappen.
In an exclusive interview with Motorsport.com, Albon dismissed the idea that Red Bull prioritizes Verstappen over him when it comes to car development.
“I think it’s very easy for people to point fingers and say, ‘Oh, the car’s built around Max,'” Albon said. “I can definitely say from what I’ve seen, that’s not the case. It’s not like Max gets to drive two seconds quicker because the car’s built around him.”
Albon’s comments come in response to speculation within the Formula 1 community that Red Bull customizes its cars to suit Verstappen’s driving style and preferences.
The topic has been a point of contention among fans and analysts, with some arguing that Verstappen’s dominant performances in the Red Bull are a result of the team’s tailored approach.
Albon, however, asserted that both he and Verstappen have the opportunity to provide input on the car’s development.
“The thing is, when you’re in a top team like Red Bull, both drivers have a say in what they want,” Albon said. “And the engineers listen to you. Of course, we have different driving styles, so we have different set-ups, but it’s not like it’s just one direction.”
The 24-year-old also emphasized the importance of teamwork at Red Bull, suggesting that the team’s focus is on achieving success as a collective unit rather than catering to individual drivers.
“Everyone at the team is working together to make the car faster,” Albon said. “That’s the goal. It doesn’t matter if it’s me or Max. We all want the same thing, which is to win races and championships.”
As the 2021 Formula 1 season continues, Albon will be keen to prove his worth within the team and dispel any lingering doubts about his role in Red Bull’s development process.
