Adam Johnson’s tragic death shook social media worldwide. Following the chilling incident on 28 October, the South Yorkshire Police Department has been investigating the case in depth. According to the latest news release, the suspect who was arrested on Tuesday on charges of manslaughter has been released on bail.
This has caused a huge uproar on social media. While no name or age of the suspect was mentioned by the police, many questioned Matt Petgrave to be the person in custody. It was his skate that slashed Johnson’s neck during the first period of the game between Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers.
While Petgrave was able to get up following their clash, Johnson was left stumbling in a pool of blood on the ice. Despite being provided with immediate medical care, the 29-year-old was pronounced dead by Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital. At that time, the police labeled the incident as a “freak accident”.
In the latest news release, the police stated that on Wednesday the suspect was no longer in custody and was “released on police bail”. They said that their “investigation continues” and further updates will be given in the future regarding the case.
“We have been carrying out extensive inquiries ever since to piece together the events which led to the loss of Adam in these unprecedented circumstances.”
Detective Chief Superintendent Becs Horsfall in statement as per AP News.
Following Adam Johnson’s death, the English Ice Hockey Association stated that all players in England will have to wear neck gears as mandatory protocol starting in 2024. The league, as well as many NHL players, have since opted out for neck gears to protect themselves during on-ice games.
Adam Johnson’s aunt “glad” with police’s quick actions regarding arrest of suspect and further investigation
Adam Johnson’s aunt Kari, revealed that she is “glad they (investigators) are being diligent with doing what they are supposed to be doing.” During the match on 28 October, Johnson’s fiancee, Ryan Wolfe was present in the arena, while his parents and grandparents were watching the match live.
They, unfortunately, had to witness their son’s untimely demise. Immediately after Adam Johnson collapsed on ice, Ryan Wolfe, ran on to be by his side, praying to God for a miracle. The players formed a protective circle around the forward to give his fiancee and the doctors a moment of their own.
Johnson’s death sent a spine-chilling message to the social media world, the fans, and NHL players, reminding them once again how dangerous the game can be. Fans thrashed Matt Petgrave as the video captured his skate going up in the air before slashing Johnson in the throat.
As of now, there’s no official statement from any side, proving that the incident was intentional or an accident. Fans are hoping that further updates from the police will clear the doubts. Petgrave, as to reports, has been said to have taken an immense backlash that may haunt him in his professional career forever.
